Product structures and BOM terminology

Compare the difference between an Assembly BOM, recursive Engineering BOM and Manufacturing BOM: what each view owns, adds and must never change.

Overview

An Assembly BOM is the independently released catalogue component structure for one assembly item. It answers what direct components and normalized quantities define that assembly, rejects direct or indirect cycles and remains an Engineering/catalogue source definition. Releasing it does not automatically hand it over, create an EBOM or MBOM, or buy, reserve, receive, issue or move material. Product Engineering deliberately selects the exact released revision in Product Configuration before baseline and recursive EBOM release.

The recursive Engineering BOM (EBOM) is the complete as-designed product structure derived from the released root Assembly BOM and every exact released child Assembly BOM. Engineering binds that structure to the released baseline, requirements, verified design records and change evidence before releasing one exact PLM handoff.

A Manufacturing BOM (MBOM) is an immutable, versioned Manufacturing translation of that exact released Engineering/PLM handoff. Every released design line must appear exactly once. Manufacturing adds governed operation allocation, routing, supply and issue strategy, process-scrap treatment and deterministic net and gross issue quantities; it cannot rewrite the Engineering source.

The short difference is: the Assembly BOM and EBOM answer what the approved product is made of, while the MBOM answers how that exact approved product will be manufactured. A released manufacturing plan then copies the exact current MBOM, and the accepted as-built record proves what was actually completed from authoritative genealogy and execution evidence.

None of these definition views silently creates or consumes inventory. Assembly and Inventory retain work-order, physical identity, custody, current-stock and stock-ledger authority, while Product Engineering and Production retain separate MBOM design-approval and release decisions.

What to do

  1. 1
    Assembly BOM

Released direct component structure and normalized quantities for one assembly item—what this assembly contains.

  2. 2
    Product Configuration

Bind the exact released Assembly BOM revision to a hardware configuration item and independently release its baseline.

  3. 3
    Recursive EBOM

Complete released as-designed hierarchy across the root and exact released child Assembly BOMs inside Engineering BOM & PLM release.

  4. 4
    Manufacturing BOM

Exact design-line coverage plus operation, routing, supply, issue and scrap evidence—how the product will be manufactured.

  5. 5
    Manufacturing plan

Build-specific controlled copy of the exact current released MBOM; no ad hoc material or routing substitution.

  6. 6
    As-built

Accepted proof of what was actually completed, derived from genealogy, operation attempts and independently reviewed result evidence.
